An Overview

With a growing interest in cycling and other soft mobility options further increased through COVID, a reinvigorated focus on improving user safety and lowering the barriers to entry to these transport methods was developed. Across the UK, most cycling accidents are caused by issues with communication and awareness, such as "misjudging others' speed". Our sleek and seamless design comes with a warning system based on the relative velocities of other users, a projected navigation system to avoid interruptions, and laser-based pothole detection and indication. These systems can be managed by an app, and customised to user needs and capabilities.

Imperial College DESIRE (Design Engineering Selected Innovation REcognition) Award 2022

July 2022 | This prestigious award is the highest award to be achieved for project work at Dyson College, awarded to the highest achieving and best outcome project at the university.

My role

  • In individual Ideation phase in a discussion with out GTA we selected my concept to progress and develop as a result, I was a key member of the team responsible for generating and developing ideas for the product. I worked closely with the rest of the team to identify potential opportunities and to develop a concept that met the needs and wants of users.
  • I was responsible for Design creating detailed designs for the product, including CAD drawings and renderings. I also developed the system design, including the placement of different components and the overall aesthetic of the product.
  • I was responsible for Layout Design for the portfolio pages, taking my team's content and displaying it in a user friendly and digestible manner.
  • As a result of ideation I was responsible for evaluating the feasibility and viability of the product, including assessing the technical and engineering requirements, and identifying any potential challenges or risks, including bringing the product to market.
  • Prepared with feedback from my group I iterated and tested Prototypes of the product, including rapid prototyping and assembling the various components. I also conducted testing and user research with another team member to gather feedback and make any necessary adjustments to the design.
  • I collaborated in the write-up and sketches of the product, making sure all the important information was included and was easy to understand.

Overall, my role in the development of Aerial was to lead the design and engineering efforts, working closely with the rest of the team to bring the product to life. I was responsible for many aspects of the product development. Team work and project managing such as Click-up tracking of progress was crucial to delivering a finished project report on time and ultimately allowing us to refine the project to the standard of the DESIRE Award.
